Official Portrait of the Honourable James K. Bartleman

to be unveiled at Queen’s Park Today


TORONTO – The Honourable David C. Onley will host a ceremony to unveil the official portrait of the Honourable James K. Bartleman – Ontario’s 27th Lieutenant Governor – at Queen’s Park at 3:00 PM on Monday 15 June. The Honourable Dalton McGuinty, Premier of Ontario will also participate in the unveiling. Mr. Bartleman served as The Queen’s representative in Ontario from 2002 to 2007. During his mandate he was renown for implementing the four-part Lieutenant Governor’s Aboriginal Literacy Program which helped establish libraries in Ontario’s 28 fly-in Aboriginal communities by collecting over 2 million books; twinning Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal schools in Ontario and Nunavut; launching the Lieutenant Governor’s Summer Reading Camps; and creating ‘Club Amick’, a book club for children. Mr. Bartleman is also well known for his work in fighting the stigma of mental illness and supporting anti-racism initiatives.

Traditionally, a portrait of each Lieutenant Governor is commissioned at the end of their term. Mr. Bartleman’s portrait was painted by the distinguished Ontario portraitist, Mr. Cyril Leeper.
