LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR AND FRIENDS TO PACK
MORE THAN 15,000 DONATED BOOKS ON TO MILITARY TRUCKS AT QUEEN’S PARK
TORONTO – On Monday, June 22nd, the Lieutenant Governor will be joined by some distinguished friends to load ten-ton military trucks with donated books to celebrate the conclusion of the Lieutenant Governor’s Aboriginal “Summer Reading” Book Drive. This weekend, on June 21st, marks the first day of summer and National Aboriginal Day and the last day Ontarians can donate a new book or two to the book drive.
“I am very pleased to announce the conclusion of the 2009 Aboriginal Youth Book Drive,”
said the Honourable David C. Onley. “Ontarians have been very generous with their new book donations and have made a tremendous gift to our Aboriginal youth.”
Students from The First Nation School in Toronto will assist the Lieutenant Governor in packing the books for Aboriginal youth in the fly-in First Nations in Ontario’s north. He will be joined at the outdoor event by Mr. Alex Jacobs, a Native Elder, who will give an invocation; Morningstar River, an Aboriginal drumming group who will perform an honour song; and by book drive partners such as the OPP, Toronto Police Service and Land Forces Central Area (DND) to speak about the success of the book drive. The books will be driven to Camp Borden, where they will be sorted by soldiers and teachers next week.
