LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR HOSTS RECEPTION
COMMEMORATING THE 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE
ROYAL VISIT OF KING GEORGE VI
TORONTO – The Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, will host a reception to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the 1939 Royal Visit of King George VI.
“To commemorate this historic visit to Canada, I am pleased to host a reception celebrating Canada’s Monarchy and the importance that the Royal Family still holds to Ontarians,”
said the Lieutenant Governor.
The 1939 Royal Visit marked the first time a reigning monarch had visited Canada. It was especially important as it brought the face of the Monarchy to thousands of cheering, rural Ontarians. Visiting such places as Sioux Lookout, Fort William, Ingersoll, and Woodstock allowed the Royals to greet and chat with regular citizens. The media were also permitted unprecedented coverage of the Royal Family and broadcasted it to fascinated Canadians in newspapers and over the radio. Within Ontario, The King and Queen performed various functions including dedicating the Queen Elizabeth Way highway and attending the Queen’s Plate.
