LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR TO MEET WITH
‘CYCLE TO WALK’ TEAM MEMBERS
TORONTO – The Honorable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, will meet with Mr. Ramesh Ferris, who is hand cycling across Canada to raise awareness and funds for polio survivors, and members of his support team on Tuesday, August 5, 2008.
Mr. Ferris, a 28-year old polio survivor, was adopted from India by Canadian parents in 1982. He visited India in 2002 and witnessed the reality for polio victims who do not have rehabilitative supports. Upon his return to Canada, Ramesh vowed to help.
“While the vast majority of current polio cases occur in distant countries where polio is still endemic, in this age of casual jet travel between continents, Canadians cannot afford to be complacent when it comes to having our children vaccinated,”
commented the Honourable David Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, who is a survivor of childhood Polio. “I applaud Ramesh Ferris for undertaking this remarkable trip, to make Canadians aware of the part they can play in the global effort to eradicate polio.”
Mr. Ferris started his trek in Victoria, B.C. on April 12, 2008, is the anniversary of the release of the Salk’s polio vaccine, and will finish the challenge upon reaching Cape Speak, N.L.
