LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR TO PRESIDE AT COIN
TOSS CEREMONY OFFICIALLY STARTING THE
95TH GREY CUP
TORONTO – The Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, will preside at the coin toss ceremony officially starting the 95th Grey Cup football game on Sunday, 25 November, 2007, at the Rogers Centre, in Toronto.
The Canadian Football League’s (CFL) 95th Grey Cup is a milestone event culminating a week-long celebration during which Canadian football’s highest honours have been awarded. This year’s Grey Cup involves the Winnipeg Blue Bombers competing against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
These two teams will be competing for the trophy originally donated by Lord Albert Henry George Grey, former Governor General of Canada. In 1909, Earl Grey donated the Cup to recognize the top amateur rugby football team in Canada. Over the years, the Grey Cup has become the property of the Canadian Football League and is now awarded to the top CFL team. The Vanier Cup, the championship trophy for Canadian university football is also named after a Vice-Regal representative, former Governor General Georges Vanier.
By officially launching the 95th Grey Cup with the coin toss, the Lieutenant Governor continues the proud tradition of close ties between the Canadian Crown and Canadian football.
The Lieutenant Governor welcomes the world to Ontario, especially those travelling from Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and commends the many organizing committees for helping the province put its best foot forward.
