A STATEMENT BY
THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OF ONTARIO
ABOUT ACCESSIBLE HOMES AND BUILDINGS
TORONTO – During my installation as Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, on September 5th, I spoke of my dream of a fully accessible Ontario, a province where disability rights would be seen as basic human rights.
Less than a month into my term of office, I am deeply gratified that the message of accessibility has been so enthusiastically taken up by the people who are responsible for building our homes and communities. At their Annual General Meeting, on September 26th, the members of the Ontario Home Builders’ Association unanimously passed the following resolution: “That the Ontario Home Builders’ Association convene a roundtable of industry experts to explore best practices and alternatives in terms of accessibility in the homes and communities we build in Ontario.”
The commitment by Ontario’s builders and contractors to furthering accessibility was recognized last week by the Ontario March of Dimes, who awarded the 2007 Community Partnership Award to Quick Contractors.com of Cambridge, and the 2007 Barrier-Free Design Award of Merit to Quality Engineered Homes Ltd of Grimsby.
I salute the members of the Ontario Home Builders’ Association, for their recognition that accessible homes and buildings are crucial to the independence of Ontarians with disabilities. And I commend the Ontario March of Dimes, for encouraging best practices in the industry, by honouring the efforts of Ontario’s builders to meet the needs of people who live with disabilities.
