In 1792 Major-General John Graves Simcoe became the first Lieutenant Governor of the newly formed province of Upper Canada (later Ontario) and set about establishing the government and locating a permanent capital at York (now Toronto). In all, 42 vice-regal representatives have represented the Crown in this province – 14 before Confederation in 1867 and 28 afterwards. Occasionally an Administrator served in this role in the interim between vice-regal appointments.
